From ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ to ‘The Last Jedi,’ this is how much Star Wars films earned in the box office

Star Wars / Facebook

The Star Wars franchise is the second highest-grossing movie franchises of all time topped only by the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. But not all Star Wars films are created equal. From “Rise of Skywalker” to “The Last Jedi,” here’s how much each of the franchise’s movies made in the box office.

“Rise of Skywalker”

Released just this month, “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker” already made its presence felt in the box office. According to CNN, the film already made more than $500 million in its first week alone. It earned

“Attack of the Clones”

Released in 2002, this film arrived just months after the release of two very successful films, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” and “The Fellowship of the Ring.” However, “Attack of the Clones” managed to hold its ground and earned a cool $649 million worldwide, according to Forbes.

“The Force Awakens”

This film marked the introduction of new characters Rey, Finn, and Kylo. “The Force Awakens” was released in 2015 and made an astounding $2.068 billion worldwide.

“The Phantom Menace”

The film came out in 1999 and managed to replicate the feel of old Star War films with the relatively unhurried pacing of its plot. Fans of the franchise loved it and its worldwide box office performance reached $1.027 billion.

“Solo: A Star Wars Story”

Replacement director Ron Howard managed to pull off a polished and well-made film in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which released in 2018. Forbes wrote that it feels more like an Indiana Jones flick and less like Star Wars movie. While fans liked it, its box office earning is not as spectacular as its more commercially successful cousins. Its worldwide earning is $393 million.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”

Released in 2016, fans will probably remember the “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” as the film where rebels stole the Death Star plans from the empire. While it might have told a different kind of Star Wars story, it was a commercial success and earned $1.056 billion worldwide.

“Return of the Jedi”

This is the third film of the franchise’s original trilogy. Released in 1983, some believe that “Return of the Jedi” is not as good as the first two films, which is supported by its worldwide sales of only $475 million, the lowest among the three original films.

“Star Wars”

The film that started it all, “Star Wars” was released in 1977. While its special effects might seem outdated these days, they were the coolest thing to arrive on the big screen back in those days, at lease as far as sci-fi fans are concerned. It raked in $775 million globally which was already pretty big at that time.

“Revenge of the Sith”

Fans will probably remember this as the film who tackled the fall of Skywalker. Released in 2005, its opening 23-minutes is reportedly the best action sequence in that decade. Global box office sales reached $850 million.

“The Empire Strikes Back”

This is the second film of the original trilogy. It was released in 1980 and is described as a bit darker and grittier than the first film. Its global earnings reached $548 million.

“The Last Jedi”

This film was released in 2017 and is described as visually dazzlingly. Forbes wrote that “The Last Jedi” probably the best blockbuster movie since “The Dark Knight” and even went further to claim that it is “the best movie ever made in the Star Wars saga.” A lot of fans will surely debate that claim but its global earning of $1.33 billion is proof that, at least, it’s one of the best.
