Epic Games just blasted through another milestone with its free Battle Royale mode for its multiplayer, online title Fortnite. The game now has over 40 million players, making it one of the most popular titles in the industry. In a recent interview, the developers touched on the subject of adding vehicles to the game, saying that there really wouldn’t be a point to them.
As currently the largest video game property using the Battle Royale format, Fortnite has a major lead on its competitors in terms of the sheer number of players. However, the game is still drawing comparisons to another blockbuster Hunger Games-esque title in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, specifically with the lack of vehicles. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Battle Royale mode lead systems designer Eric Williamson said that adding transport in the game really isn’t necessary.
“We talked a bunch about vehicles and pros and cons,” Williamson told the publication. “But we don’t have a need to add vehicles to get around the map because our travel times allow you to get mostly wherever you want to go. When we discuss vehicles, we talk about trying things with unique functionality and make it not just about going from point A to point B. That’s the extent of it.”
The interview also covered many other aspects of the game, including the matter of adding a new map. It doesn’t seem like the developers are in any hurry to actually do this, however, since they haven’t really even finished the one that exists right now.
As Gamespot reports, Epic will be adding some new elements to the Battle Royale map through an upcoming update, which is coming to all platforms. There will apparently be new points of interests as well as additional named areas. The developers also want to help make certain areas on the map feel more distinguished in order to help with recognition, allowing for swamps and mountains to actually feel different.
