Ford Motor issued a new recall order for more than 634,000 sports utility vehicles. This will affect units that were sold worldwide.
Ford Motor said that its latest callback covers the Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUVs with 2020 to 2023 model years. The units are those with 3-cylinder, 1.5-liter engines, and the issue cited by the automaker was fuel leaks that can cause a fire.
As per Reuters, due to the cracked fuel injector, the fuel could spill or leak vapors can happen into a hot engine and ignite flames. The recall was confirmed on Thursday, Nov. 24.
Ford Motor is urging owners to bring their vehicles to authorized dealers to have them checked and prevent any untoward incidents. Many of the recalled models are said to have been recalled in April as well. At that time, the problem was the oil separator housing that could crack and leak the liquid then cause an engine fire.
The Dearborn, Michigan-headquartered automaker said that there is still a need to fix this old issue once car owners bring their units to dealers for the latest recall. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) affirmed that customers must address the two defects as soon as possible.
Authorized dealers will perform a vehicle software update to see if there are cracks in the fuel injector. The flaw will also be detected through a message on the dashboard that is designed to alert drivers of car issues. Mechanics will also put a tube to drain the fuel from the cylinder head to move it away from hot surfaces in the hood.
"If a pressure drop in the fuel rail is detected, engine power will automatically be reduced to minimize any risk, while also allowing customers to drive to a safe location and stop the vehicle and arrange for service," Ford Motor said.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press News reported that at this time, the exact repairs are not yet available, but once they are released, Jim Azzouz, Ford’s executive director of customer, said that they would immediately schedule service for the affected units. All owners will receive a notification for the recall starting Dec. 19.
