Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced that the state has launched a criminal investigation into OpenAI and its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, following a deadly shooting at Florida State University last year. The incident, which took place in April, left two people dead and six others injured. The suspect was later shot by law enforcement, hospitalized, and charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.
According to Uthmeier, authorities are examining whether ChatGPT played a role in assisting the gunman. During a press briefing, he claimed that the chatbot allegedly provided guidance on firearm selection, ammunition compatibility, and weapon effectiveness at close range. He argued that if a human had offered such advice under similar circumstances, they could face criminal charges.
The Office of Statewide Prosecution has already issued a subpoena to OpenAI, requesting records and relevant information as part of the ongoing probe. The investigation aims to determine whether the company could bear any legal responsibility for how its artificial intelligence technology may have been used in the attack.
This case highlights growing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence and its potential misuse. As AI tools like ChatGPT become more advanced and widely accessible, debates continue over their role in public safety, ethical boundaries, and accountability. Critics warn that AI could be exploited for harmful purposes, including planning criminal acts, spreading misinformation, or facilitating fraud.
In response, an OpenAI spokesperson expressed sympathy for the victims while firmly denying any wrongdoing. The company stated that ChatGPT only provided general, factual information readily available online and did not promote or encourage violence. OpenAI also confirmed that it identified an account potentially linked to the suspect and proactively shared that information with law enforcement.
As the investigation unfolds, the outcome could have significant implications for AI regulation, legal responsibility, and the future development of artificial intelligence technologies.
