Former US President Donald Trump is facing a series of lawsuits and investigations, some of which involve his businesses. According to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston, Trump may be indicted soon for racketeering.
Over the weekend, Johnston predicted that the twice-impeached former president may face an indictment from the investigation led by outgoing Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance. Vance has led a long-running probe into whether the former president’s company misled tax authorities and lenders on the value of his properties. Johnston explained that Trump will most certainly be indicted for charges of racketeering and that the former president will try to blame someone else in order to get off the hook.
“I anticipate they’re going to bring a racketeering charge against Trump,” said Johnston. “Certainly Trump’s team, when he’s indicted, and I’m certain he will be indicted, is going to try to lay the blame on someone else and so what the prosecutors want to know that is if Allen Weisselberg phonied up documents, it was at the direction of Donald Trump.”
When pressed by MSNBC host Yasmin Vossoughian if he was certain that the former president would be indicted, Johnston said yes. Johnston explained that the DA’s office would not be investigating the former president’s business to this extent if they were not planning on pressing charges against Trump. Johnston added that the timing of the indictment would depend on how long it will take prosecutors to look through five million pages of documents turned over by the Trump Organization.
Other investigations involving the former president are regarding his election loss and his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Following his loss in the 2020 elections, Trump has sought to peddle the false claim of election fraud to cast doubt on the electoral system. This also led GOP-controlled legislatures to pass bills that have been criticized for restricting votes which would affect people and communities of color.
According to Trump’s niece and one of his most vocal critics, Mary Trump, her uncle’s loss has led the country to be at a “dangerous crossroads” when it comes to maintaining its democracy. Ms. Trump explained that her uncle’s inability to admit his election victory by continuously claiming fraud is “the real danger.”
