Final Fantasy is one of the biggest and oldest gaming franchises in the business and according to its creator, Dissidia Final Fantasy might just have the makings of an e-sports game. The title finally came out in arcade form in Japan, so it’s clear that there is multiplayer competition interest. In related news, it would seem that the upcoming Power Rangers reboot has caused Square Enix to delay a DLC for its latest title, Final Fantasy XV.
Dissidia is an altogether different game compared to more traditional Final Fantasy titles because it is focused more on battling other characters in a free for all rumble. This is part of the reason why it was launched as an arcade game in Japan last year, Kotaku reports. This is also why its creator, Takeo Kujiraoka thinks that it can be a great e-sports game.
Speaking to Weekly Famitsu, which was then translated by Gematsu, Kujiraoka explains that a console version of the game with a campaign is in the works. In fact, developing the single-player mode is what’s causing the title’s slow release. On the other hand, if the game gets enough traction and momentum, it could become a huge e-sports event.
“If we can export it to the world as a high-proficiency, competitive fighting tool, while also an enjoyable team battle Final Fantasy, it might even rise up as an e-Sports event,” Kujiraoka said. “If that happens, then next will be a global tournament, right? I can’t say too much, but I want to use these sorts of ambitions to make Dissidia Final Fantasy an even better game.”
In related news, the Magitek Exosuits for FFXV was revealed recently and was meant to be a DLC item that players could use in-game, Forbes reports. These items have deep ties to the Final Fantasy franchise, but their resemblance to the power suits worn by characters in the upcoming Power Rangers movie has caused some delays. This was according to Hajime Tabata, the game’s director himself.
