“Daredevil Season 3” has now been released on Netflix and fans are in for an action-packed treat in this installment. As can be expected, Matt (Charlie Cox) is still recovering from his wounds he acquired at the Midland Circle by the end of “The Defenders,” Variety reported.
As such, the first two episodes of “Daredevil Season 3” saw the character recuperating and reflecting on the events that took place prior to this installment. Matt also thinks about his actions and how his goodwill was punished rather than rewarded, throwing him in a moping state that he grapples with for a while.
“He is broken physically, broken emotionally, and broken spiritually,” series showrunner Erik Oleson said. “A building fell on his head. He is not in a good place. He’s angry about what has happened to him and he’s got some issues to work through.”
To help Matt recover quickly, “Daredevil” Season 3 introduced Sister Maggie (Joanne Whalley), the nun who oversees the healing process of the beloved protagonist. But Maggie found quickly that healing someone’s mind is far more challenging than tending to Matt’s physical wounds. Eventually, though, the Daredevil finally recovers and he’s back on the streets and rooftops of Hell’s Kitchen.
As such, plenty of action scenes occurred in “Daredevil” Season 3, especially since there are two main antagonists who are working against Matt. Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) has taken the villain mantle once again and the acting of D’Onofrio is a work to behold as he breathes new life into the beefy antagonist.
The other villain came in the form of Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), arguably one of the deadliest foes that Matt encountered in the comics. With D’Onofrio’s imposing presence and Bethel’s twitchy performance, “Daredevil” Season 3 is a welcome treat for fans of the superhero series.
As for the fighting sequences, this aspect of the series more than delivers even though Matt goes through a horde of faceless henchmen once more. Cox and his stunt double, Chris Brewster (who also substitutes for Captain America), did a remarkable job of portraying gripping extended fight scenes. EP Erik Oleson said that he placed a lot of emphasis on the action scenes of “Daredevil” Season 3, particularly on the outcome of each conflict.
“I wanted to have really great action sequences, but personally I don’t like action sequences where I know the outcome before it starts,” Oleson said. “It’s dangerous on a show like ‘Daredevil,’ especially one where the titular character is the one doing the fighting, that the audience knows already that the hero’s going to walk away unscathed. That provided a unique challenge.” Tall as the order may have been, the showrunner nailed this aspect, making “Daredevil” Season 3 a fresh and riveting story filled with character development and adrenaline-filled fight scenes.
