“Criminal Minds” season 14 has the fewest episodes since the franchise debuted in 2005. And this is enough to keep the rumor mill on the show’s possible cancellation running.
Before “Criminal Minds” season 14, the franchise saw a low episode count in season 3. But even then, CBS ordered 20 episodes. Currently, viewers are only looking at having 15 episodes if the TV network does not have a last-minute change of heart.
For the record, there is no official word yet on whether or not “Criminal Minds” season 14 will be the show’s last installment. However, there are other signs that it could be.
CinemaBlend pointed out that “Criminal Minds” season 14 is primarily produced by ABC Studios, and CBS, on the other hand, serves as the distributor in the United States. This practically means that CBS needs to dish out a little bit more budget to keep the show on air.
Unfortunately, according to reports, season 12 had an average of 7.466 viewer ratings but that number dropped to 5.730 for season 13. It also does not look great if one is going to compare the “Criminal Minds” season 14 opener ratings (4.4 million) to the season 13 premiere (around 7 million).
On the other hand, CBS seems open to the idea of having more episodes in “Criminal Minds” season 14. During the TCA summer press tour in August, CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl was asked about the very obvious change in the show.
“As scheduling evolves and we try to get more original episodes on air, we have to cut and paste and sometimes trimming episodes on some of those shows to get more originals on the air,” Kahl explained to Deadline. “They possibly can get a couple of more episodes. It depends where they are in production, they will let us know when (we need to make that call).”
For now, it is best for fans to enjoy the current storyline in “Criminal Minds” season 14. In the upcoming episode, it appears that Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) is going to be on everyone’s radar.
It has been several episodes since she was kidnapped by a murderous cult. Although she was saved in the “Criminal Minds” season 14 premiere, Garcia is likely having a hard time to move on, Cartermatt suggests.
In fact, showrunner Erica Messer previously teased that what Garcia experienced in episode 1 will have an obvious effect on her, which will be noticeable in the remaining episodes. New episodes of “Criminal Minds” season 14 air Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
