Cosplay Posing: Luwucifer Gives Tips for What to Do with Your Hands

Finding ways to make your hands look interesting when posing for a photo can be challenging, especially if you’re new to cosplay. Having gone viral for being a hands cosplayer, Luwucifer gives you the following tips to help you look more graceful in situations where you have to pose with your hands.

1. It’s okay to do nothing with one hand

You could be doing a pose that engages one hand while the other is idly just hanging there awkwardly. For instance, you’re leaning against a wall with your right hand while your left is just well, there. According to Luwucifer, it would be way too much to do something with your left hand as it would be distracting the main act, which is you leaning on the wall. So if you’re doing something with one arm and you’ve found a pose, or someone’s posing you, don’t worry too much about the second arm. It’s not a bad thing to just let it hang.

2. Avoid clumping your fingers when posing

Clumping your fingers in a pose makes you appear tense and less relaxed. So if you want to have soft, graceful hands when posing, shake out your hand by wiggling it before a pose, then stop. You will notice that your hands look 100% completely relaxed and staggered nicely. The only thing you will need to adjust is your wrist, depending on the pose you’re trying to achieve.

3. Glide and Hold

For waist-up shots, instead of just sticking your hands at the position where you want them, glide and hold. For example, if you’re doing a photo where you’re touching your face, glide your hands up and down your face and hold for a shot. Similarly, if you’re doing something with your hair, glide through the hair instead of just sticking your hands there and waiting for a picture. This makes your pose look more natural and prevents you from looking stiff.

4. Don’t force your hands at a ninety-degree angle

Luwucifer says that the best hack to make your hands appealing for a hands-only shot is to try not to force them to a ninety-degree angle. Whether you’re doing a pose where your hands are on your waist or holding something like a gun holster, for instance, ensure that your wrist is not pushed up. You can employ the glide and hold method to avoid looking unnatural and strained.

5. When posing with both hands, try not to mirror them

For headshots that require you to use both hands apart, try to make your hands diagonal from each other on either side of your head instead of putting them at a position where they are equally mirrored. It doesn’t look impressive.

6. If you’re doing a chin pose, make sure it’s soft and open so that people can see where your jawline is coming from instead of blocking it.

7. Do not shove your whole hand in your pocket

If you’re doing a character that requires you to put your hands in your pocket, don’t let your entire hand disappear into your pockets. A simple way to combat this is to stick your thumb out of the pocket.

It may take you several attempts before you become a natural at this or even draw attention to yourself as Luwucifer did from his hands’ cosplay, but it sure does get easier with practice.
