Remedy Entertainment’s critically-acclaimed action-adventure game “Control” is getting a spin-off, but it will not be in a single-player format. The developer announced on Tuesday that it has once again partnered with publisher 505 Games for the release of a multiplayer title. Meanwhile, Remedy also provided a small update to assure fans that they have not seen the last of the franchise.
The upcoming “Control” multiplayer spin-off will feature a four-player co-op gameplay. Aside from the PC platform, though, the game will only launch on current-generation consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. There were not many details provided in the official announcement, other than the multiplayer’s codename “Condor.”
Condor will be developed using Remedy’s Northlight engine and an initial development budget of €25 million or more than $29.7 million in the current exchange rate. “Control” was rated with flying colors when it launched on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2019. But the game became extremely popular for its story-driven single-player campaign.
Remedy also recognizes that its fanbase is mostly familiar with their work on single-player games, including the equally famous “Max Payne” series. “We get that there is going to be skepticism about multiplayer,” “Control” game director Mikael Kasurinen wrote. “But I believe we can create shared experiences without compromising the unique DNA of who we are, or the stories we want to tell.”
Meanwhile, Remedy also provided a small hint at their plan for the future of the “Control” franchise. Without giving specific details, the developer confirmed that it intends to “expand” that franchise with a “bigger-budget” installment – that seems like the closest sequel announcement fans can get at this point.
It is unclear at which stage of development Condor is at right now, so it may be too early to predict when the multiplayer spin-off is going to be released. For now, long-time fans of the developer may want to check out the “Control Ultimate Edition” that is currently offered with a discount through the Steam Summer Sale for $15.99 until July 8.
The story of “Control” revolves around the main protagonist Jesse Faden (Courtney Hope), who leads a secret government agency called the Federal Bureau of Control. They are tasked to study and neutralize paranormal phenomena. The game is mainly set in the Oldest House, where an entity called Hiss has wreaked havoc as it attempts to breach a dimensional barrier and enter the world where Jesse lives.
