CTC has been supporting TARDEC with advanced joining solutions since 2001; this most recent contract will continue to leverage the knowledge and experience gained through the previous efforts. Under this new “Friction Stir Welded Hull Manufacturing Prototype” contract, CTC will continue to collaborate with TARDEC to conduct fatigue, ballistic, and other qualification testing on welds. Additional prototypes will be built to demonstrate the improved designs.
“We are very pleased that TARDEC values our past performance and is confident that we will continue to add value to this very important program,” said Edward J. Sheehan, Jr., CTC President and Chief Executive Officer. “CTC has a long history of optimizing manufacturing processes, including friction stir welding. I’m proud that we are playing a role to improve mission effectiveness through advanced manufacturing.”
While friction stir welding has been determined to be the best method to join the lightweight, high-strength aluminum alloys on the HFBC hull prototype, the assessments performed under this contract will help determine what modifications need to be made to improve performance and manufacturability in support of the final NGCV hull design.
“CTC is fortunate to have highly qualified and dedicated employees, including welders, engineers, and support staff, who will continue to perform at a high level to benefit our client” said P.J. McMullen, CTC Manager of Advanced Technologies and Project Manager for this effort. “Our work will ensure the best possible design of this vehicle and will add to our expertise for the benefit of future efforts as well.”
This contract was garnered through the Defense Automotive Technologies Consortium, of which CTC is a member. The period of performance runs from September 28, 2017 through September 27, 2022.
