OpenAI’s $200 ChatGPT Pro subscription unlocks the exclusive O1 Pro Mode, offering unparalleled AI reasoning and efficiency. This premium tier targets researchers and developers, delivering advanced tools for tackling the most complex tasks.
ChatGPT Pro Sets a New Standard in AI Subscriptions
Today, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Pro, their premium chatbot, which can be subscribed to for $200 a month.
The San Francisco startup has planned to release a plethora of announcements starting today, so this release is just the beginning of what is expected to be a busy 12 days.
At this tier, you get access to all the features of OpenAI's $20/month subscription plus a lot more AI models, such as GPT-4o and o1. Using an exclusive OpenAI model called o1 pro mode, which utilizes additional processing capacity to process answers, is available to users with a $2,400 per year ChatGPT Pro membership.
"Power users of ChatGPT, at this point, they really use it a lot, and they want more compute than $20 can buy," stated CEO Sam Altman during the video broadcast unveiling the new premium tier on behalf of the company.
What Makes ChatGPT Pro Worth $200?
This subscription is designed for really active users who want nearly limitless access, as well as academics who may be interested in trying out ChatGPT for more demanding work. The steep price tag may surprise some customers, but these people are worth it.
There was no announcement on the price changes to OpenAI's other subscription tiers, and the free option is still available.
The company's consumer chatbot's first subscription option, ChatGPT Plus, debuted in February of last year and is still priced at $20 per month. When you upgrade to ChatGPT Plus, you gain access to all of the latest features and generative AI models.
Furthermore, OpenAI does not impose a rate limit as strictly on these subscribers as it does on free users. A user's subscription tier determines the daily request limit and the amount of time they may spend chatting with ChatGPT's top voice interface.
o1 Pro Mode and Its Unique Capabilities
The new $200/month membership is aimed at customers who use OpenAI's generative AI model for more complex tasks. According to OpenAI research scientist Jason Wei, "People will find o1 pro mode the most useful for hard math, science, or programming problems" during the video stream, WIRED shares.
The startup makes it obvious that its terms of service are still in effect, even if ChatGPT Pro members have what OpenAI defines as "unlimited access" to the o1 model, GPT-4o model, and Advanced Voice Mode functionality. Therefore, it is not permitted and might lead to account banishment to engage in activities such as account sharing or utilizing the Pro plan to power one's own service.
Within the first two weeks of acquiring the $200 subscription, users can request a refund through OpenAI's online help center if they are displeased.
The o1 Model: Faster and Smarter AI
Along with ChatGPT Pro, OpenAI also announced that the o1 model, which is now available to all users, is out of preview. This model primarily concentrates on "reasoning" capabilities and multi-step processing of user input.
This newly released o1 model, says the company, is faster, more accurate, and can now take photographs as inputs. The o1 setting of ChatGPT will soon have online surfing and file upload capabilities added at the startup.
New artificial intelligence features from OpenAI are likely to keep trickling out as we near the year's end.
What’s Next for OpenAI in 2025?
One of these year-end releases could be Sora, OpenAI's much-anticipated generative AI video model, according to The Verge.
Some of these upcoming announcements may also shed light on Altman's plans for 2025, including his thoughts on artificial intelligence agents, tools that could take over your online duties, and the direction the firm is taking.
