Brazil's Central Bank (BCB) is speeding up the deployment of a real-time crypto threat alert system in reaction to a major $180 million cyberattack in July 2025 that saw illegal money moved via cryptocurrency. Designed in cooperation with blockchain security company Hypernative, the system seeks to give banks and local crypto exchanges the tools to detect, react to, and track money related to cyberattacks—shifting from reactive investigations to proactive on-chain monitoring. This project targets the growing use of bitcoin as a "cash-out" source for ransomware and extensive fraud.
The new system will automatically notify the financial organizations involved and offer real-time detection of suspicious crypto streams. These warnings will let places flag, freeze, or help to recover money before it is washed. Hypernative's knowledge of on-chain threat detection and automated response for digital assets will be used; notifications will be distributed among a group of banks and exchanges rather than just the central bank. Industry groups should put this system in place within the following few weeks after favorable testing with market players.
This proactive monitoring mechanism fits Brazil's more general legislative initiatives to improve digital asset transaction security. Under Resolutions 519–521, it corresponds with stricter controls for Pix, Brazil's rapid payment system—including 24-hour preventive holds on virtual-asset transfers above $10,000 and improved audit and traceability standards for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs). The BCB is also creating machine-learning-based fraud probability indicators that stretch an "early warning" logic from conventional financial systems to the cryptocurrency field.
