“Bodyguard” Season 2 has yet to be ordered by BBC although the chances of it happening are more than likely. The action-packed political drama managed to reach viewer numbers rivaling that of Downtown Abbey, ensuring the renewal of the series.
Show creator Jed Mercurio is also confident that BBC will greenlight “Bodyguard” Season 2. During his interview with Lorraine Kelly, Mercurio assured fans that David Budd (Richard Madden) would be returning to the small screen, Heat Word reported.
At the moment, it’s still unclear what the show creator is planning for “Bodyguard” Season 2. After being accused of the death of Right Honorable Julia Montague MP (Keeley Hawes), Budd managed to clear his name and eventually finds himself in the arms of his estranged wife. Budd was last seen walking into the veteran’s affair office, speaking with a therapist, and admitting that he needs help with the thoughts that are troubling him.
With the previous installment providing stellar ratings for BBC, the network will need to decide fast what they’re planning for “Bodyguard” Season 2. The urgency stems from the rumor that Madden will be the next James Bond after Daniel Craig relinquishes the title in 2020. If this proves to be true, then it will be the end for Madden playing Budd.
There’s also the problem of Mercurio’s writing. It appears that the show creator has yet to make significant progress in writing “Bodyguard” Season 2 if Madden’s previous statement is anything to go by. "We're talking about [season 2]. [It's] all in Jed Mercurio's brilliant mind. So it's up to him what happens next. I can't wait to read it,” Digital Spy reported.
Further complicating matters is Mercurio’s involvement in “Line of Duty,” which will certainly take a chunk of his time away from “Bodyguard” Season 2. Hopefully, all these complications will be resolved soon as fans can’t wait what will happen next for the titular war veteran.
