In the fourth quarter, Nix orchestrated a six-minute drive that positioned Denver for a potential game-winning field goal as the clock wound down. However, as time expired, the Chiefs managed a clutch field goal block, securing the victory.
Earlier, Nix kept Denver’s offense moving by finding wide receiver Cortland Sutton for a crucial third-down conversion with under two minutes left, allowing the Broncos to run out most of the clock. The rookie finished the game with 215 passing yards and two touchdowns, completing 22 of his 30 attempts.
Chiefs Extend Streak with Ninth Straight Win, Mahomes Leads Comeback Against Nix and Broncos
The Chiefs’ win marks their ninth straight victory when trailing at any point in the second half, setting an NFL record. In a solid first half, Nix threw for 160 yards and connected on 14 of 20 passes, including a 32-yard touchdown to Sutton. He spread his completions across eight different receivers, showcasing a developing chemistry with Sutton, while rookie Devaugn Vele recorded his first career NFL touchdown in the matchup.
With this win, Mahomes and the Chiefs continue to lead the AFC West, eyeing a third consecutive Super Bowl title. Nix and the Broncos remain third in the division, trailing the Los Angeles Chargers.
Ahead of the game, Nix shared his thoughts on playing against Mahomes, expressing admiration for the Chiefs’ quarterback. “I’ve obviously watched [Mahomes] for a long time since he was putting up really good numbers in college, and now obviously in the league, you know he’s the best in the league right now. Everyone is trying to match him. Everybody’s trying to catch up, I feel like,” said Nix.
The Broncos took an early 14-3 lead in the second quarter, but Kansas City narrowed the margin with a late touchdown before halftime. Despite Denver’s defense sacking Mahomes four times, his 266 passing yards and one touchdown ultimately propelled the Chiefs to their 16-14 victory.
