When “Diablo 3” came out, it was so poorly received that it would have been a disaster had it continued the way it was. The title was saved because Blizzard decided to replace the original game director with Josh Mosqueira who almost single-handedly made changes that made the third installment in the legendary series great again. This is why so many are shocked at the announcement that Mosqueira would be leaving Blizzard, which puts the future of “Diablo 3” at risk.
As Tech Times noted, Blizzard has been sending out some feelers for a new game director for quite some time, which only fueled rumors that either one was going to be replaced or there was another project that needed new blood for. For those who have been following along with the most recent developments with the franchise, this news isn’t at all that new.
For one thing, Brian Kindregan and Leonard Boyarsky, writers at Blizzard also recently left. For another, John Yang and Don Vu, high profile designers did the same. With so many talented figures leaving the project, this does put into question the ability of Blizzard to produce great games, or at the very least, its ability to continue the pace with “Diablo 3” that was started by Mosqueira.
Fans will remember the changes that took place once “Reaper of Souls” came out and even before that, with the changes in the transactions related to the game getting the most attention. Then again, it seems the path that “Diablo 3” is already on is the reason why Mosqueria’s departure won’t be that big of a deal since supposedly, it’s already in a good place.
Whether or not this will be enough for fans of the game, though, is the question. Another question is whether or not there will be another expansion after “Reaper of Souls,” as Forbes asks. With so many key figures going away, this doesn’t seem likely.
