'Black Mirror' Season 5 Release Date, Spoilers: 'San Junipero' Sequel, Is It Happening?; New Episodes Are 'Out Soon'

One of the most popular Netflix original series to date is “Black Mirror.” In an array of brilliantly written and mind-bending sci-fi episodes, many fans agree that season 3’s “San Junipero” is one of the best so far. Is being a fan-favorite episode enough for it to have a sequel in “Black Mirror” season 5?

“San Junipero” revolved around the love story of two women named Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who met in 1987. But it was later revealed that San Junipero is a simulation where the dead’s consciousness can be uploaded, and old people can “visit.” Yorkie and Kelly had a happy ending and lived in the simulation after being euthanized, and it makes a sequel in “Black Mirror” season 5 possible. The only question is, are the producers going to do it?

Unfortunately, a “San Junipero” sequel is not happening in “Black Mirror” season 5 or, possibly, in following installments of the series. “In terms of a sequel to ‘San Junipero,’ no, certainly not in its current form – I don’t think we’d revisit those characters unless we had a really, really good reason,” series creator Charlie Brooker previously told NME.

“San Junipero 2” might not be in the cards for “Black Mirror” season 5 but Brooker did not entirely dismiss the idea of continuing Yorkie and Kelly’s story now that they are virtually living together forever. “I very much doubt that we would do that as an episode. Maybe as a graphic novel or some sort of commemorative biscuit; but we wouldn’t want to pick that apart and tinker with it, as we’d like to leave Kelly and Yorkie where they are,” Brooker further explained.

Meanwhile, the release of “Black Mirror” season 5 was seemingly pushed back as Netflix released its first interactive movie “Bandersnatch” where viewers can choose how the story will advance. But Brooker promised earlier this year that new episodes are arriving, though, it is not certain if it is happening in 2019. “It’s all imminent-ish. It’ll be out soon,” Brooker told RadioTimes.com.
