‘Black Mirror’ season 4 creator Charlie Brooker admitted that he was actually pro-technology despite creating the dark and satirical series. He also hinted of the possibility of another “San Junipero-style story” during a recent panel.
According to Bustle, creator Charlie Brooker teased more details on the much-anticipated fourth season of the science-fiction anthology series known for its bleak and disturbing take on technology and its effects on modern society. It seems that the series will take on a more optimistic direction compared to its predecessors.
Brooker said during a panel at the fourth annual Vulture Festival in New York City last May 21, "I'm pro-technology… Much of the time I see tech stuff and I'm like 'Oh Goody!’… I don't believe that [technology is in control of humanity]. I know this show seems that it was written by the Unabomber, but I'm pro-technology."
Although Brooker and executive producer Annabel Jones remained tight-lipped about specific details for season 4 other than confirming the completion of the scripts, Brooker teased that he wrote a script for an episode called “Snowflake” that he would like to revisit.
He revealed that season 4 would have one of the series’ shortest episodes and another one that would be the series’ longest episode and also teased that he may create another “San Junipero” type episode. It was previously speculated that the series would do a sequel on the popular episode since the creators admitted that they were open to the idea of follow-ups but admitted that they didn’t want to “ruin” anything by revisiting old stories.
Meanwhile, it was reported that one of the episode will be adapted from a short story penned by comedian, author, and magician Penn Jillette. According to /Film, Jillette revealed the news during an episode of his podcast.
He explained, “I got this idea for this short story called “the Pain Addict.” I was postulating a future where you could put a gizmo on your head and feel someone else’s pain. So there would be doctors whose whole job it was to feel pain and say “His left arm is broken. That’s not actually appendicitis, that’s a cancer thing.” They felt every pain. Like prizefighters and childbirth and child cancer. And this guy gets addicted to it and starts beating people to feel their pain.”
Jillette talked about his time of admission at a Spanish welfare hospital back in 1981 and how the idea was conceived. He also revealed that he had lunch with Brooker and they began exchanging ideas for the show.
He continued, “I’ve been trying to find a place for this story, which I thought was really good. I tried to write a comic book and they said no. I pitched it as a movie and they said no. So I told Charlie Brooker all of this and he said “Oh, pain addict. That’s good.”
‘Black Mirror’ season 4 official release date on Netflix is yet to be announced.
