Believe it or not, the popular bedtime phrase “Don’t let the bed bugs bite” rings true as these insects are considered a nuisance to the household. Here are ways to tell if your household has an infestation and how to get rid of them.
A bed bug infestation is one of the worst things to happen to a home. What makes these pests such is that they feed on the blood of whatever they cling to, from humans to animals in order to reproduce, and they are also a challenge to treat as they are also immune to pesticides. Bed bugs have flat oval bodies and are brownish in color, almost resembling an apple seed.
Just like the phrase, “Don’t let the bed bugs bite,” these pests feed on their hosts at night, making them nocturnal creatures, and they usually go around from clothing, to used sheets, and even in furniture. These creatures reproduce quickly so it is important to spot the signs as early as possible before they multiply and spread all throughout the home.
One of the signs of bed bugs lies in the smell. One can be able to tell that bed bugs are present when there is a strong, musty odor, similar to that of a wet towel that has not been dried properly. This odor is a pheromone released by bed bugs, and the more they are, the stronger the smell will be.
The second sign is on the body. If there are itchy welts on the body, usually in zigzag or cluster formations that appeared overnight, it may be a sign of bed bugs. Bed bugs will feed on exposed skin.
The third sign can be spotted on the bedsheets or pillowcases that are used. If there are rust-colored spots, it could be the blood from bed bugs or their exoskeletons as these bugs also shed their skin. Bed bugs tend to leave stains after feeding, so it is important to check the sheets, especially the corners of the bed.
In case of a possible infestation, wash all the contaminated bed sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and clothing in hot water and use the highest setting when drying. It is also advised to contact the local pest control company in order to properly get rid of the infestation.
