Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle might no longer be living in the White House but they’re still one of the most popular couples in the world. Recently, the Obamas made headlines when they purchased a 6,892-square-foot house on Martha’s Vineyard which started speculations on just how much the Obamas are worth.
So how much are the Obamas’ net worth? Surprisingly, estimates vary greatly.
ES Insider, for instance, estimates the fortune of Barack and Michelle Obama to be around $40 million. According to the publication, Barack Obama earned $20.5 million between 2005 and 2016. The majority of this multi-million earning came from his two books “Audacity of Hope” and “Dreams of My Father.”
Barack Obama earned $400,000 a year when he was the President from 2009 to 2017. Thanks to the 1958 Former Presidents Act, he also receives $205,700 a year as his pension.
But his biggest income probably came from his deal with Netflix. Barack Obama inked a deal with the streaming giant to produces movies and series for multiple years. While the amount is still undisclosed, The New York Times claimed that similar deals are worth tens of millions of dollars.
Meanwhile, Barack and Michelle Obama received $65 million from the Penguin Random House for their memoirs. The former president got $1.9 million in January 2005 for his “The Audacity of Hope” memoir but the amount does not include royalties yet.
Forbes claimed that he got a total of $8.8 million from the book. Meanwhile, his other book, “Dreams From My Father,” earned him another $6.8 million.
Mr. Obama is also paid handsomely every time he is asked for a speaking engagement. The former POTUS reportedly earned up to $400 thousand for these talks.
But for The New York Times, Barack and Michelle Obama’s net worth is definite than the $40 million figure stated by ES Insider. According to the publication, the former First Couple is actually worth more than $135 million and that estimate was made way back in November 2018.
The New York Times claimed that the majority of their fortune can be traced from two sources. They received a $65 million book advance and their Netflix deal is estimated to be worth $50 million.
