Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a two-year freeze on tax hikes for draught beer, aiming to ease costs for pubs, brewers, and hospitality businesses. The move comes as the Labor government faces declining popularity ahead of the general election due by May.
Australia, one of the world’s wealthiest nations per capita, has some of the highest alcohol taxes, with inflation-linked hikes occurring twice a year. Albanese stated that pausing the excise indexation, starting in August, would help lower beer prices and support local businesses and regional tourism.
"Attending pubs is part of who we are as Australians," Albanese said during a visit to a Sydney brewery, emphasizing that the measure has been long requested. The announcement was broadcasted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
While alcohol remains a key part of Australia’s social culture, research suggests a growing trend toward abstinence due to rising prices and health concerns. The tax freeze may provide temporary relief, but its long-term impact remains uncertain as economic and social shifts continue.
