It is now more than a year since Asus unveiled the Zenfone 8 series. But its successor -- most likely called Zenfone 9 -- appears to be launching imminently after the company reportedly released an official trailer for the device.
Asus Zenfone 9 design
The Taiwan-based tech manufacturer may have accidentally released the video teaser for Zenfone 9 on its official YouTube channel. The video is nowhere to be found on the channel, suggesting it had been taken down, but not before TechGoing spotted it and got a copy of the trailer.
Tech fans will immediately notice the design changes in the Zenfone 9 compared to its predecessor. For one, the upcoming device sports a boxy appearance, possibly inspired by the newer iPhone designs in recent years. The two rear-facing lenses are no longer placed in a conventional camera bump and are lodged in large, individual camera holes.
Unlike the Zenfone 8, the upcoming flagship phone's fingerprint scanner is in a side-mounted component instead of under the display. It appears to also function as a scroller called ZenTouch that people can use when reading a website's content.
The same video indicates Asus will retain a 5.9-inch Super AMOLED display for the Zenfone 9. And the selfie camera will still be in a hole-punch cutout at the upper left corner of the screen.
Asus Zenfone 9 specs
Like earlier Zenfone trailers, the video for Zenfone 9 also revealed details of its core technical specifications. It will be powered by Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and will have a bigger 4300mAh battery.
The video says Zenfone 9 will have "massively upgraded" cameras, which include a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary sensor. To compare, the Zenfone 8 had a 64MP Sony IMX686 main camera. Another major enhancement is the new camera's 6-axis Gimbal module for improved image stabilization, which is also highlighted in the leaked video.
Asus will retain the dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack in Zenfone 9. And the company may also offer official accessories for the flagship phone, including a Connex phone case with a kickstand or a cardholder.
Unfortunately, the video did not mention a launch window for the Zenfone 9. But the Zenfone 8 officially entered the market in late June last year, and the accidental release of the official trailer could be hinting at an imminent announcement.
