Apple Embarks on AI Chip Development for Data Center Capabilities

Apple's latest development, an AI chip, poised to enhance data center technologies.

Apple Inc. is set to transform the tech landscape with its newly developed AI chip, tailored specifically for data center operations. Dubbed Project ACDC, this initiative marks a significant leap in server technology, potentially setting a new standard in the AI-driven industry.

On Monday, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Apple is reportedly developing its chip to power data center artificial intelligence software.

Project ACDC: Apple's Answer to AI Demand in Data Centers

"Apple has been working on its own chip designed to run artificial intelligence software in data center servers, a move that has the potential to provide the company with a key advantage in the AI arms race," WSJ reporters Aaron Tilley and Yang Jie, citing information from sources with knowledge of the situation. "ACDC" is the abbreviation for Apple Chips in Data Center.

According to Reuters, the initiative, codenamed Project ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center) internally, seeks to utilize Apple's proficiency in semiconductor design to improve its server infrastructure.

Project ACDC has been in development for several years, but the newspaper reports that neither the date nor how it will be disclosed is known.

Elevating Server Efficiency: Apple's Technological Advancements

As per the report, Apple's server chip, a pivotal component of Project ACDC, is strategically designed to primarily focus on running AI models, a process known as inference. This decision underscores Apple's commitment to optimizing AI performance in its data center servers.

9to5Mac adds that the claim follows this week's statement by analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities that Apple is powering servers devoted to iOS 18's new AI-based capabilities with M2 Ultra and M4 CPUs.

Apple's AI Expansion: Building a Skilled Team

Apple's commitment to AI doesn't stop there; the Cupertino behemoth recently expanded its artificial intelligence operations by staffing two offices in Zurich with generative AI workers.

The company has notably attracted 36 experts from Google to enhance its team. Interestingly, one of these offices is so discreet that even neighboring locals are unaware of its presence.
