Alphabet launched its most advanced artificial intelligence model, Gemini, which can process various forms of information like video, audio, and text. This highly anticipated AI model demonstrates superior reasoning and understanding, marking a significant milestone for the technology giant.
Enhanced Capabilities for Google Assistant
According to CEO Sundar Pichai, Gemini represents Alphabet's major scientific and engineering feat. Business Standard noted that the development is a response to Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT, fueling Google's race to create AI software that competes in terms of capabilities.
Google introduced elements of the Gemini model into its AI assistant, Bard, on Wednesday, as per Reuters. Plans are in motion to release the most advanced version of Gemini through Bard early next year, promising an AI assistant that can reason and understand information with nuance.
Alphabet designed three versions of Gemini, each optimized for different levels of processing power. The most robust iteration operates in data centers, while the smallest is efficient for mobile devices. Significantly, Gemini is cost-effective, delivering superior capabilities alongside improved efficiency.
Eli Collins, DeepMind VP of Product, underlined Gemini's efficiency, acknowledging its enhanced capabilities while maintaining cost-effectiveness. Although substantial computing power is required for training, Google continues to refine its processes and improve efficiency.
Advancements in AI Hardware
Alongside Gemini, Alphabet announced its latest generation of custom-built AI chips, Cloud TPU v5p. These chips enable faster training of large language models, boasting a three-fold increase in speed compared to prior versions. Starting Wednesday, developers can access the new chips in a "preview" state.
The Cloud TPU v5p chips comprise 8,960 chip pods, providing immense training capabilities for large-scale AI models. Alphabet's commitment to improving hardware aligns with its goal of pushing the boundaries of AI development.
Gemini represents a significant leap in AI model development, propelling Alphabet into new realms of information processing.
