The fate of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” remains in a dire state as the first film failed to reach $500 million that would’ve justified the making of the sequel. But a quick tour on the web using the keywords “Alita: Battle Angel 2 sequel” and one would see that there is genuine interest from a lot of fans about a second entry.
However, given the first film’s poor sales performance and the one-dimensional characters that have already been featured, what are the chances of Disney greenlighting “Alita: Battle Angel 2?” The answer is low.
One of the major reasons why the Mouse House might choose to bench the sequel is that it wants to focus on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now that “Fantastic Four” and the “X-Men” are under Disney, the company would want to establish both these franchise’s storyline. This is especially true since Marvel movies have proven to be consistent with their sales performance. And with the predecessor of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” failing to deliver on this front, it might be difficult to convince Disney to proceed as planned.
But there are several points to consider that might change this narrative. For starters, it’s easier to sell “Alita: Battle Angel 2” to the masses since the franchise has already been introduced. Another point of contention is that the world of Alita (Rosa Salazar) is an intriguing place to explore.
The technology alone is enough to pique the interest of the fans. And with Zalem presumably the backdrop for “Alita: Battle Angel 2,” this curiosity is further heightened. But perhaps the most convincing argument that James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez can put forward is lower production cost.
With the first film establishing the groundwork of the physical set for “Alita: Battle Angel 2,” a lot of the props are already in place just waiting to be put to use. Marketing might also be lowered compared to the first film since – as has been mentioned earlier – audiences have already been introduced to the world and its heroine.
Of course, the future of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” lies on the hands of Disney and it would be interesting to see if the Mouse House agrees to a sequel. Then again, if James Cameron is involved then the company may give the highly-acclaimed filmmaker another shot.
