With a game like the upcoming Agony that’s set in Hell, that’s attempting to depict all of the gory details that such an environment entails, some extremely graphic scenes should be expected. It seems this recently became a problem for the developers since, in order for the title to be released on consoles, it had to be censored. This caused an outcry from the community, so the creators responded that the PC version will come with a patch that will allow all those blood and entrails scenes to be clearly visible.
As DualShockers notes, the developers of Agony WayPlay had to walk a fine line between following their vision of the game and making sure that they actually make a profit. In order for the game to be released on consoles, it had to get the rating M for Mature and it could only do this by toning down the gore and censoring some parts that were deemed far too graphic.
If it didn’t do this, the game would have been slammed with the dreaded AO rating, which stands for Adults Only. This would have immediately placed the title out of the hands of console players and potential customers.
On the other hand, the gore is exactly what excited fans are eagerly awaiting to see in the game. That’s why the developers announced on its Kickstarter page that for PC players, at least, the censorship won’t apply once a patch has been created.
“We also want to confirm that we are preparing a special, optional patch for PC that will remove the aforementioned “censorship”. We would love to do something similar for consoles but from a technical and legal point of view it is simply not possible,” the page reads.
“With that in mind, we decided that backers who have bought the console version of Agony will be able to convert it into a PC version. Details on how to do this will be provided soon in the next update, here on Kickstarter.”
