Kyrie Irving, Dallas Mavericks' star point guard, is set to launch a signature shoe with Chinese sneaker giant ANTA in 2024, following his recent split from Nike amidst controversy. This strategic partnership expands Irving's impact, marking his rebirth as ANTA's chief creative officer.
Anticipated for an early 2024 release, Irving's signature shoe with ANTA is already generating excitement. As part of the partnership, he will also assume the role of the company's chief creative officer. Irving joins the ranks of other notable NBA players, such as Klay Thompson and Gordon Hayward, who have also joined forces with ANTA.
Expressing his enthusiasm about this collaboration, Irving stated that he is thrilled to embark on this journey with ANTA and that sharing the same dreams, goals, and values is fundamental for any successful partnership. He added that ANTA's remarkable growth, embrace of creativity, devotion to family and teamwork, and expertise in product innovation and manufacturing processes have left an indelible impression on him and his A11Even team. He also said that together, they aim to create something extraordinary for generations.
Previously, Irving had a successful signature shoe line with Nike—one of the best-selling in the league. However, due to a controversial incident involving promoting a film and book named "Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America," which contained antisemitic themes and tropes, Nike put their partnership with Irving on hold in November.
In response to the incident, Nike released a statement denouncing hate speech and antisemitism, announcing their decision to indefinitely suspend their relationship with Irving. As a result, the highly anticipated release of the Kyrie 8 was canceled, deeply disappointing both Nike and its supporters.
Nike co-founder Phil Knight later indicated that the company was unlikely to renew its partnership with Irving following the controversy. Rebuilding his brand and reputation, Irving's collaboration with ANTA offers a fresh start and an opportunity to create new and exciting athletic footwear that will inspire fans and athletes alike.
