In a world where personal stories of courage and resilience often go untold, one individual's harrowing experience sheds light on the importance of good character, persistence, and the will to survive. This is the story of Redashnie Hurribans, a remarkable individual who narrowly escaped the clutches of danger while on a work-related trip, in Johannesburg, South Africa proving that life's lessons are often learned through unexpected and challenging circumstances.
While attending a legal symposium in Johannesburg, Redashnie’s life took an unexpected turn when she found herself in a life-threatening situation. Redashnie was targeted by individuals involved in the horrific world of sex trafficking. Despite the terrifying circumstances, Redashnie displayed immense courage, and quick thinking, managing to narrowly escape her would-be captors while being transported back to her hotel.
This incident served as a testament to the resilience and sense of urgency Redashnie has cultivated throughout their life. Her ability to stay composed under pressure, think clearly, and take decisive action undoubtedly played a crucial role in her escape.
Likewise, in her world of legal affairs and for far too long, many attempting to navigate the legal system have often found it to be confusing, vague, and frustrating. No matter where people live, citizens all over the world struggle to get the support and advocacy they need to effectively make it through the legal process. Law firms are often understaffed, overworked, and stretched too thin, but, fortunately for her clients, Redashnie continues to figure out how to do more with less, deliver better results, and maintain an open, collaborative approach every step of the way.
Redashnie’s empathy for people in difficult legal situations started at a very early stage in her development. At the tender age of 14, she watched her aunt try to navigate the legal process following the death of her uncle. Her uncle was murdered while on duty as a police officer, leaving her aunt destitute with very few resources to help her adjust to life as a single parent and sole provider/caretaker for the household. Although she was just a young girl, Redashnie pulled together all the financial resources she had at her disposal to provide some much-needed financial help to her aunt, made available through her own sports modeling career that started a year earlier at age 13, but Redashnie knew deep down it was not enough.
From a young age, Redashnie’s father instilled in her the importance of working hard and embracing the importance to serve others in life. These values became the guiding principles for Redashnie’s life, shaping her character and approach to every endeavor. One of Redashnie’s favorite quotes is, "True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us” – Socrates, which perfectly encapsulates her lifelong quest for knowledge, serving others, and leaving her mark on the world.
Filled with a heart’s desire to make a much larger impact in her world and serve other families in similar situations to her aunt’s, she decided then that she would become an attorney. Eventually, she found her way into the field of non-profit labor law, solidifying her ability to help individuals and families that had fallen on hard times not knowing how to navigate the legal world. While Redashnie’s early career years did not end up in law school; they were, however, devoted to working at law firms initially as a paralegal, increasing her level of responsibility through a progression of promotions, leading up to becoming a case management administrator for all of Cape Town Soth Africa; thereby, affording her the opportunity to acquire the requisite hands-on experience she needed to understand this complex mixture of law and operations.
In these roles, Redashnie processed legal requests and served as the liaison between The Court and its debtors, reconciling customer accounts and escalating unresolved disputes as necessary. She learned how to influence difficult conversations and move through heart-wrenching situations with empathy. As a case management administrator, Redashnie managed the screening of arbitration referrals, issued subpoenas, and conducted audits of closed cases for her employer.
Eager to move on, upward and tackle more intricate challenges, Redashnie decided to serve as an officer manager, over the legal/operations area in Cape Town, South Africa following her pursuit and completion of a formal education in 2009. In this role, Redashnie manages 43 direct reports and 82 auxiliary staff members daily. She is responsible for verifying the organization’s compliance with federal and province requirements, as well as reporting financial and operations performance metrics. Redashnie is a leader that has transformed the organization she’s employed by and has made a significant impact on the entire legal system in her homeland as well.
Under Redashnie’s leadership, her department has achieved a #1 ranking among all 22 provinces in South Africa for five consecutive years. There has been a 10% cost reduction for taxpayers due to her ability to settle cases out of court, while 98% of her clients rated her department with a “Excellent” rating throughout the same five-year period. Redashnie’s passion for what she does speaks for itself through results – both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Not only does Redashnie continue to challenge her clients, peers, and industry that things can be done differently, she continues to prove to herself that leading with empathy and purpose is never the wrong answer. She has seamlessly navigated every obstacle, both personally and professionally, in the spirit of giving more hope to the world around her. Although she works in and around the legal system, the true impact she makes is in households all over the world. Households like her own and her aunt’s all those years ago.
The combination of a solid foundation composed of a strong work ethic, persistence, and independence, along with the pursuit of wisdom and good character, have proven to be the bedrock foundation in Redashnie’s ability to survive. Her journey is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity and thrive, even in the face of unimaginable challenges.
Redashnie’s experience serves as a powerful reminder that danger can strike at any moment, and the importance of being prepared both mentally and emotionally cannot be underestimated. By sharing her story, Redashnie hopes to inspire others to be pursue the good in life, act with a sense of purpose/urgency, embrace their inner strength, and never take their freedom for granted.
As Redashnie continues to navigate life's journey, her story stands as a beacon of hope, reminding all of us that being of good character, persistence, and the will to not only survive but thrive are not just words, but the cornerstones of a life well-lived.
