Subaru erred in its news release after revealing 2024 Solterra prices and revisions. Subaru wrongly stated that some 2024 Solterra buyers will be eligible for the $7,500 EV tax credit. But there is one (big) issue: it was not built in the United States.
Subaru Owners Are Not Eligible For $7,500 EV Tax Credit
Subaru unveiled the 2024 Solterra electric SUV yesterday, with significant enhancements like faster charging and more. Because of an improved battery conditioning mechanism, the 2024 model can recharge up to 80 minutes faster in harsh temperatures.
The new Soltera can charge from 10% to 80% in "as little as 35 minutes," down from "under an hour" in the previous year's model. As per Electrek, the new model also includes an improved steering wheel with regenerative braking force paddle switches and standard roof rails.
Subaru stated that the roof rails are suitable for a rooftop tent or other heavy goods, with a static load capability of 700 pounds (176 pounds dynamic).
Despite the enhancements, Subaru maintained the same starting pricing. The 2024 Solterra starts at $46,340, including the $1,345 destination cost.
Subaru Clarifies Federal Tax Credit Eligibility for 2024 Solterra with Leasing Loophole
Meanwhile, the press statement stated that the "2024 Solterra will qualify for applicable federal tax credits of up to $7,500 for some owners." As online vehicle research firm CarsDirect points out, Subaru makes the Solterra overseas, therefore it is not eligible for the EV tax credit through purchase.
Nonetheless, it is eligible for the credit under a leasing loophole. Subaru product relations manager Todd W. Hill acknowledged that "the tax credit may be available to those who lease the vehicle."
Hill went on to say, "In general, we refer to both purchasers and lessees as 'owners,' but in this context that language isn't as clear as it could be."
Subaru revised the press release to say, "The 2024 Solterra will qualify for applicable federal tax credits of up to $7,500 for some customers." The fine print at the bottom says, "When leased through Subaru Motors Finance."
The 2024 Solterra starts at $46,340, while the top Touring trim costs $53,340. The 2024 Subaru Solterra Touring features a gloss black hood accent, a panoramic sunroof, and more.
According to Fueleconomy.gov, the 2024 Subaru Solterra's EPA range is up to 227 miles. The Limited and Touring variants have a range of 222 miles.
