“13 Reasons Why” gained controversy as much as popularity since its release on Netflix, thanks to its sensitive subject matter. The teen drama, which is based from author Jay Asher’s bestselling book, features a series of tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, a troubled teen who took her own life following some traumatic experiences she faced in high school. In Canada, multiple school systems are already placing policies in place, which are for some in dispute because it pertains to curbing freedom of speech.
Selena Gomez, who executive-produced the series, came to the show’s defense and said that she stands behind in her TV project’s message to teens. Although she was “a little overwhelmed and very surprised,” about “13 Reasons Why”’s success, she stressed that she fully supports the show’s message about the real world, The Huffington Post reported.
“I believed in the project for so long and I understood what the message was. I just wanted it to come across in a way that kids would be frightened, but confused ― in a way that they would talk about it because it’s something that’s happening all the time. So, I’m overwhelmed that it’s doing as well as it’s doing,” she said.
However, her next comment seems to affirm that Season Two of “13 Reasons Why” could be underway. When asked if a second installment of the Netflix series will happen, she coyly said, “Maybe!”
Netflix has yet to confirm whether it has ordered a second installment of “13 Reasons Why.”
