Global Geo-political Series: U.S. and South Korea calls for North Korea oil embargo; Russia and China to block move

The United States reportedly drafted a resolution at the United Nation’s Security Council calling for an oil embargo on North Korea in order to bring the Kim regime to the negotiating table. South Korean President Moon Jae-in has also pressed for such embargo during his one to one meeting with the Russian President Vladimir Putin. The resolution drafted by the United States includes a ban on country’s exports of textiles which are the second largest export material of North Korea after minerals and earns around $752 million per annum. China is the consumer of such exports. The resolution also calls for assets freeze of leader Kim Jong-Un and travel ban. United States ambassador Nikki Haley said that the United States is pushing for a vote on the resolution on the coming Monday, while Russian envoy to the U.N. said that such voting is premature.

Though Russia is not a major supplier of oil to North Korea, President Putin said that he is opposed to an oil embargo on North Korea after his meeting with Moon Jae-in pointing that such an action would bring tremendous hardship for the ordinary people of North Korea and will hamper basis services including Hospitalization. Russia supplied around 40,000 tons of Crude oil to North Korea last year, while China supplied around 500,000 tons of raw crude and 200,000 tons of oil products.

It is not clear at this point, whether China supports the resolution but President Putin’s comments do suggest that such resolution is unlikely to get passed on Monday.
