Global Geo-political Series: President Trump lashes out at China after North Korea’s missile launch

After North Korea test-launched a second inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) on last Friday, the US President Donald Trump lashed out at China by saying that China is doing nothing to deter threats from North Korea. His comments signaled greater trade dispute and reciprocal trade restrictions in the United States for Chinese goods. After his inauguration, President Trump took a relatively softer stance compared to the campaign on trade as he called on the country to help the United States to deter threats from North Korea. China is North Korea’s biggest trading partner.

In Twitter, President Trump said, “I am very disappointed in China. Our foolish past leaders have allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet... ...they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk. We will no longer allow this to continue. China could easily solve this problem!”

Earlier in July, Trump boasted of an “excellent meeting” he had with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Hamburg, saying he appreciated what had been done regarding North Korea and calling China “a great trading partner. “However, in late June, the US imposed sanctions on a Chinese bank for allegedly laundering money for North Korea. Restrictions were also placed on two Chinese citizens as well as a shipping company for allegedly assisting North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.
