Avid fans of the Caitriona Balfe- and Sam Heughan-starring TV series, “Outlander,” might have noticed that their characters, Claire and Jamie, were seen in fewer sex scenes compared to the earlier seasons. Luckily for fans who missed the earlier days of the show, the Fraser couple is likely getting more intimate encounters in “Outlander” season 5.
Balfe's and Heughan's characters went through major changes in “Outlander” season 4, especially when they got reunited with Sophie Skelton's Brianna. Their daughter's story became one of the main storylines that also meant a relatively less screen time for Jamie and Claire. To other followers of the franchise, it meant more than just seeing fewer sex scenes and had something to do about the TV series adaptation’s deviation from Diana Gabaldon’s original works.
To address this concern, “Outlander” co-executive producer Maril Davis explained that the changes in the TV series are inevitable. “[In season 4] we were introducing more characters, and there was a lot of story to get in. We've always talked about the sex scenes—we love them too—but they have to be organic to the story," Davis told Glamour.
It can be recalled that Heughan and Balfe have both discussed the intricacies of writing, filming, and including sex scenes in “Outlander” episodes. “If there’s going to be sex … it has to tell you something about where the character’s at or move forward the story in some meaningful way and we always have those discussions,” the model-turned-actress told Entertainment Weekly.
Now that “Outlander” season 5 will see Jamie and Claire continue building their family home in the Fraser’s Ridge, does this mean Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan will be filming more sex scenes again? Davis hinted, “I do anticipate a return, hopefully, to that next season a little more. Every season has its different storylines and where we're going. It can't always re-create the first season, which was very special, but it just has to be within the story and feel like it’s organic. That's something we work on, and the actors work on. It’s a collaboration."
