The wait for “Code Geass” Season 3 is nearing its end as Sunrise Studio said it will be released on February 2019. However, although fans are excited about this new installment, most are left confused as to where exactly the story is going.
The confusion stems from the fact that not only is Lelouch alive but will actually act as the main protagonist of “Code Geass” Season 3. It can be recalled that the titular character died, or staged his own death, at the hands of Zero and has vanished after the fact.
To help clarify things, director Goro Taniguchi and writer Ichiro Okouchi said that “Code Geass” Season 3 will not be a sequel to the original series but to the three recap films. To put shortly, the upcoming installment will follow a different timeline but doesn’t necessarily negate the events that took place in the show, Polygon reported.
The team behind “Code Geass” Season 3 seems to be exploring a new avenue for Lelouch with retcons that allow for the character to survive his supposed death. “At the time of the television series, I intended to close the book on Lelouch’s story after the final episode. However... ‘Glorification,’ is a little different. It wasn’t intended to be an end but a beginning,” Okouchi explained.
Apart from Lelouch’s revival, another character seems to be returning from the dead as well. The character in question is Shirley, a close friend of Lelouch and whose death left a significant scar on the beloved protagonist. Now, not only is Shirley going to be alive in “Code Geass” Season 3, but she’s also going to be playing a major role in resurrecting Lelouch.
What’s more, they’re also going to give Shirley a Geass of her own that would likely be a key factor in the return of Lelouch. Hopefully, the writers and animation studio have something special lined up for “Code Geass” Season 3 that would make it stand out from its predecessors. After all, Lelouch’s death in the original series strictly follows the principles of the character regarding death and service.
