“Westworld” Season 3 is slated to start production this month, which means the third installment will not be airing this year. But the long wait didn’t come as a surprise given how HBO handled the previous entries, Refinery29 reported.
And with “Westworld” Season 3 drastically changing the series’ formula, it’s understandable that the network is taking their time in creating the upcoming installment. The previous finale saw that some of the hosts have now broken free of the park, the first time that such an event occurred in the series. One of the hosts that have gained its freedom is Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood).
Show co-creator Lisa Joy previously said that they’ve always planned for the hosts to escape the park and pose potential complications to the real world. Fellow show co-creator Jonathan Nolan even hinted at the motives of Dolores in “Westworld” Season 3 and what fans can expect from the character moving forward.
“The hosts have a different version of mortality, a different outlook. I think clearly with Dolores, as she's laid out, there is a longer view here, a larger set of goals. They're existential. They span eons. And that's a fascinating level of story to engage in,” Nolan revealed. It’s already been hinted that “Westworld” Season 3 will have Dolores free more of the hosts that are contained in other parks.
Following that, she can potentially lead them to wage a war against their creators. Of course, not all hosts are eager to engage in violent conflicts as has been observed with Teddy (James Marsden). But what’s truly interesting in “Westworld” Season 3 is the journey that these hosts will take and how the real world will shape their point of view.
The idea of an artificial intelligence developing humanity through their interactions with society has already been explored before. And so does the angle of AI turning against the human race after witnessing the species’ brutal nature. Whatever Joy and Nolan are planning on “Westworld” Season 3, it will surely be a gripping storyline.
However, some fans are hoping that the creators don’t complicate the show too much as has been seen in the second installment. Some of the criticisms that Nolan and Joy received is that they injected too much misdirection into the show’s narrative that it was difficult to follow the plot, even for hardcore fans. As for the release date of “Westworld” Season 3, both remain reticent about that front. But given that production has yet to begin, a 2020 release is looking like the best bet for the series’ return.
