Digital Extremes unveiled the 11th “Warframe” expansion, called “The New War,” and it is slated to be one of the biggest updates for the 8-year-old free-to-play action RPG. The developer is adding more to the game’s roster of playable characters while also bringing back a familiar race of enemies as the main adversaries in the upcoming expansion.
The announcement of the next “Warframe” expansion was the highlight of the recently concluded TennoCon 2021. The presentation of “The New War” included a 30-minute gameplay demo, which included even more surprises. The teaser confirmed that three characters, including the Conclave Master Tenshin, the Grineer soldier Kahl 175, and the Corpus engineer Veso, are going to be playable in this update.
“The New War” is also advertised to offer the “most ambitious cinematic quest” yet for “Warframe. A major theme of its story appears to revolve around uniting the Tenno and their allied factions in the threats posed by the Sentients in the Origin System. The history of the Sentients shows why it makes sense to have them as the main adversaries in the next expansions.
The Sentients are one of the most familiar groups of enemies introduced in the game, who were long thought of as a truly alien race until it was revealed that they are an artificial race from the Tau System that later gained sentience. They were known to be the fierce enemies that almost defeated the Orokin during the Old War.
Digital Extreme is also adding highly requested features to “Warframe” in the next big update. The studio confirmed that it has started the development of cross-play and cross-save functions for the game. This should be a welcome addition, considering the game has become widely available on various platforms since it first launched on PC in 2013.
“With the addition of Cross Play, all major updates will ship simultaneously across all platforms, so Tenno on Console can rejoice about never having a cinematic Quest spoiled again,” the developer said in a TennoCon 2021 recap. The cross-play feature will also support the game’s upcoming mobile version. “The New War” and other “Warframe” updates announced at TennoCon are slated to launch in the second half of 2021.
