The presence of scientific minds in the American political system has been severely lacking for decades, but the absence of scientist leaders has become more noticeable due to the current administration’s anti-science attitude. As a result, some scientists are now thinking of running for office in an effort to push back against the war on science.
In a recent opinion post published by The New York Times, the Trump administration’s disdain for science and President Donald Trump’s mistrust of experts in the scientific community is palpable. Not only is the sitting president of the United States an open climate change denier, he has also failed to fill many of the crucial roles in his administration related to the fields of science, including the president’s science adviser.
The current administration has even gone to great lengths to limit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by suppressing climate data as well as making budget approvals more difficult. So far, the only scientific field that the Trump government has shown interest in is space travel, which is largely all flair and no substance.
Some scientists have finally had enough of the government cracking down on facts and evidence, and geologist Jess Phoenix is incensed enough to plan a run for office. Phoenix was one of the key figures during the March for Science rally in Los Angeles last year. Speaking to Futurism, she discussed her intention to become the representative of the 25th Congressional District in California.
“Without elected officials who acknowledge both the validity and importance of science in every aspect of our lives, the United States is heading for disaster of epic proportions,” Phoenix explains.
The U.S. has already fallen from grace in the eyes of many countries, especially after President Trump decided to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord. Other countries have since risen up to become the leaders in this fight, including France, Germany, and even China.
