As a path to long-term peace in the Ukrainian conflict, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has suggested using blockchain-inspired ideas to transform Russia's political system. Ahead of the fourth anniversary of the attack, he condemned Russia's activities as "criminal aggression" in statements released in early February 2026 and claimed that decentralised governance models—derived from Ethereum and crypto ecosystems—could help prevent authoritarian consolidation and more fairly spread power among citizens.
Adoption of techniques like quadratic voting—where the price of votes increases quadratically to better capture the intensity of preferences and lessen manipulation by rich or strong interests—is central to Buterin's vision. He also stressed digital democratic methods trialled in blockchain communities, which might promote more just decision-making in Russia when combined with consistent global pressure and support for Ukraine to guarantee regional stability and prevent further aggression.
Born in Russia, Buterin has vocally condemned the invasion from day one as a crime against both Ukrainian and Russian people, donated millions in ETH (including $5 million in 2022) to support activities, visited Kyiv during the conflict, and advocated cryptocurrency's part in enabling quick, censorship-resistant financing for Ukraine's military and humanitarian requirements when conventional channels failed.
