This month marked the fifth year since “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” was released, but it appears that the game will have one more release coming up. Sony has confirmed that the game is planned to launch on PC.
Sony has a vast network of first-party studios that allowed its PlayStation platform to get a wide array of exclusive titles every year. While this has been one of the proven strategies of Sony in approaching the so-called console war with Microsoft’s Xbox, the company has had a history of bringing first-party games to the PC platform.
A good example is the widely successful “Horizon Zero Dawn.” The game developed by Guerilla Games was released on PS4 in 2017. Though the title eventually became available on PC, it took about three years before the port went live. This appears to be the same fate of “Uncharted 4” after Naughty Dog delivered the action-adventure in 2016.
The plan to release “Uncharted 4” on PC was confirmed during Sony’s Investor Relations Day in a 37-page slideshow presentation. There are no other details provided, and Sony has not mentioned a specific release window yet. But the company identified the game as one of its planned PC releases.
“Uncharted 4,” along with the already available “Days Gone” port, are the only first-party titles Sony listed for PC releases. But the company has made several hints at having more things planned for the PC platform. “We will explore expanding our 1st party titles to the PC platform, in order to promote further growth in our profitability,” Sony said in Corporate Report last August after “Horizon Zero Dawn’s” launch on PC via Steam.
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan gave another hint that fans would see more first-party games launching on PC in an interview with GQ last February, the same month the “Days Gone” PC port was confirmed. When asked about Sony’s sudden interest in reaching out to the massive PC gaming market, Ryan said, “There’s an opportunity to expose those great games to a wider audience and recognise the economics of game development, which are not always straightforward.”
The company exec also implied that the success they saw on “Horizon Zero Dawn’s” PC release served as a guide on how they intend to tackle bringing games outside the PS system. “Horizon Zero Dawn” reportedly sold 716,000 digital copies on PC in its release month alone sparking comparisons with the success of “The Witcher 3” on the platform.
