US General Services Administration lists blockchain applications under government consideration

On the heels of recent reports on the U.S. General Services Administration’s efforts to embrace blockchain technology, the agency has now launched a new portal which lists blockchain applications currently under consideration by the government, CoinDesk reported.

The GSA held an inter-agency blockchain forum on July 18 in Washington, D.C. A program of GSA’s Emerging Citizen Technology program, it was organized in partnership with the Secretary of State’s Office of Global Partnerships and GSA’s Office of Information Technology Category. Earlier in June, reports suggested that the agency is going to work on a federal blockchain pilot project this summer.

“GSA’s Emerging Citizen Technology program launched the U.S. Federal Blockchain program for federal agencies and U.S. businesses who are interested in exploring distributed ledger technology and its implementation within government,” the GSA said. “We hosted the first U.S. Federal Blockchain Forum on July 18, 2017, uniting more than 100 federal managers from dozens of unique agencies to discuss use cases, limitations, and solutions. Agency teams submitted their own potential use cases for Blockchain technology to our current repository of almost 200 submissions.”

According to the portal, the blockchain use cases submitted by agencies for exploration are focused on a number of areas including financial management; procurement; IT asset and supply chain management; smart contracts; patents, trademarks copyrights, royalties; government-issued credentials like visas, passports, SSN and birth certificates; federal personnel workforce data; appropriated funds; and federal assistance and foreign aid delivery.

The Emerging Citizen Technology program collaborates with agencies, startups, small businesses, civic organizations, and inter-agency communities to implement government-wide public service modernization initiatives such as Artificial Intelligence for Citizen Services, Blockchain, Virtual and Augmented Reality, and Social Technologies.
