The United Kingdom has pledged £150 million ($205 million) to the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. UK Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed the funding on Wednesday, emphasizing Britain’s continued support for Kyiv amid ongoing Russian attacks.
The PURL initiative was established last summer to ensure a steady flow of U.S. weapons to Ukraine at a time when new American military assistance had temporarily stalled. The program enables allied nations to finance the purchase of critical U.S.-made military equipment, including advanced air-defense systems, on Ukraine’s behalf. By contributing directly to this mechanism, participating countries help accelerate the delivery of urgently needed defense resources.
“I’m pleased to confirm the UK is committing £150 million to PURL,” Healey said in a statement. He stressed the importance of collective action among allies, adding that Ukraine requires enhanced air defense systems to respond effectively to what he described as President Vladimir Putin’s continued and intense military offensive.
The UK’s latest pledge forms part of a broader international effort to support Ukraine’s defense strategy. According to U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker, allied nations have already committed more than $4.5 billion through the PURL program. These funds are being directed toward air-defense systems and other essential military equipment designed to protect Ukrainian cities, infrastructure, and civilians from aerial threats.
Britain’s financial contribution underscores its leading role in European security and transatlantic cooperation. As the conflict continues, coordinated funding initiatives like PURL remain central to sustaining Ukraine’s military readiness and ensuring access to advanced U.S. defense technology. The additional £150 million commitment signals the UK’s determination to stand alongside its allies in bolstering Ukraine’s long-term security and resilience.
