Looking at how many female streamers are on Twitch, many of whom are drawing in views with scandalous outfits and gimmicks, one could be forgiven for thinking that there are plenty of women on the platform. However, it seems the Amazon-owned service doesn’t think so, which is why it is offering support to female streamers who are just starting out in the form of a grant.
The program that Twitch is pushing for is called BroadcastHER and is a result of a collaboration with the 1000 Dreams Fund. According to the announcement post with regards to the grant aimed at female streamers, the money is intended to help prop up their fledgling channels so that they can continue to improve and gain viewers.
“1DF created a grant specifically to support female broadcasters on Twitch. The 1,000 Dreams Fund Twitch BroadcastHER Grant provides financial assistance to eligible women to help with expenses such as travel to gaming conventions, educational conferences, hardware upgrades, and instructional programs related to creative or artistic pursuits. This grant is not intended for everyday expenses (e.g., utility bills, food costs) or costs related to medical care,” the post reads.
Now, it’s worth noting that the amount that these streamers will get isn’t going to make them rich. Each semester can see eligible females getting amounts of $500 to $2,000, which they can then use to buy new equipment, games or whatever else they need in order to grow their base.
As to why there was even a need for the grant, PCGamesN reports that it’s about highlighting the so-called gender pay gap among streamers. Apparently, female streamers are not getting as much financial support as their male counterparts in this particular online media. Applications for the grant are scheduled to open on March 1st, with 1000 Dreams Fund intending to host a live stream that is meant to raise awareness for the grant.
