After “Twitter,” “Facebook,” and “Instagram” all declared that they would be having livestreaming features, “Tumblr” finally catches up with its own take on the trend. However, instead of creating its own asset to do the livestreaming with or purchasing a third-party app, “Tumblr” will be partnering with existing video streaming sites.
“Tumblr” detailed the addition of the livestreaming feature on an official post, telling users how they can do the livestream thing and which third-party streaming services they can use. Among the sites that users can post livestreaming videos with include “YouTube,” “Kanvas,” and “YouNow.” In essence, Tumblr will simply be the publishing platform under which the discovery of the service and user content was made.
Tech Crunch explains how users will be able to enable the livestreaming feature on their “Tumblr” accounts, saying that users need to use the partner apps in order to get the feature up and running. Once everything is setup, livestreaming can be done at any time. The apps will also be available for both Android and iOS, though the latter will have to wait for a while.
More importantly, it would seem that “Tumblr” will be treating the livestreaming feature much like its competitors, even if the site is not the actual host of said videos. Followers of the account doing the livestreaming will get a push notification and they will also be notified during a republishing of a live video.
Venture Beat also noted how “Tumblr” is planning on partnering with bigger media outlets in the future such as MTV and The Huffington Post, so the site certainly has some big plans for their livestreaming feature. This is important particularly because Facebook is splurging $50 million for famous celebrities and media figures to help boost the exposure of their own livestreaming feature.
