It’s been some time since YouTube made some major changes to its desktop platform, but the company is finally taking its Material Design out of alpha. As a result, anyone who wants to take the new design for a spin can do so. There’s even the new Dark Mode, for those who like a little more angst when browsing edgy videos or whatever it is teens get up to these days.
YouTube has been testing this new design for over a year, The Verge reports, before finally allowing users to give it a go. According to the company, the new design was meant to emulate the experience that users get with their smartphones, which offers simplicity to its interface and its overall appearance.
As for the features, the Material Design comes with infinite scrolling, so users could technically keep on going down to find the videos that might interest them. There’s also the end-to-end user profile banner, for anyone interested in such a thing, as well as a hero video that got larger.
Then there’s the Dark Mode, which effectively makes the background of the page pitch black. This serves to highlight the videos that users watch and is easy enough to toggle. All users have to do is click on the user icon and turn it on.
It’s worth noting that the universal access to the preview does not necessarily equate to unlimited access. Users all around the globe can opt in right now, but once there have been enough people trying it out, it’s likely that YouTube will close the server so that it can monitor the feedback from users.
Anyone who wants to see what all the fuss is about can go to https://www.youtube.com/new and check it out for themselves. There’s no need to worry that the change might be permanent either since it’s easy to revert to the old design.
