The long wait is over for the free “The Witcher 3” next-generation upgrade. CD Projekt Red announced that the game’s new version for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and newer high-end PCs will be available next month with new content inspired by the franchise’s live-action Netflix adaptation.
CD Projekt Red announced on Monday that “The Witcher 3” next-gen upgrade will be available starting Wednesday, Dec. 14. It will be free on all platforms for players who already own the original version of the game.
To recap, “The Witcher 3” next-gen version was initially planned to launch in 2021. But as many gaming fans know, CD Projekt Red had to deal with various project delays that included the free next-gen upgrades for “The Witcher 3” and “Cyberpunk 2077.”
Saber Interactive initially worked on the next-gen version of “The Witcher 3” and set a second launch timeline for mid-2022. The project was delayed another time, though, before CD Projekt Red’s in-house development took over earlier this year and announced that the upgrade would be released in the last quarter of 2022.
“The upcoming update will feature dozens of visual, performance and technical enhancements, including ray tracing support, faster loading times on consoles, a variety of mods integrated into the experience,” CD Projekt Red said in a separate blog post. The studio is also adding a free set of DLCs, including new weapons and armor for Geralt, inspired by the Netflix “The Witcher” series. The DLC will also feature “alternative looks” for some characters.
New players can get the next-gen version of the game through the standalone copy “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition”, which will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It will feature all the game improvements, story expansions “Hearts of Stone” and “Blood and Wine,” and free DLCs. CD Projekt Red says a physical copy will be available “at a later date,” but it is unclear if it will come with collectible physical items.
CD Projekt Red will continue supporting the last-gen version of “The Witcher 3.” In the same blog post, the developer said it is working on an update for the game’s versions on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch with “numerous additions and improvements” and Netflix-themed DLCs as well. But a release date is still under wraps.
