News about “The Last Kingdom” Season 4 is still scarce as Netflix remains mum about the fourth installment. However, Alexander Doetsch, who’s playing Uhtred of Bebbanburg, has confirmed via Twitter that the fourth entry will be happening.
So far, the series has followed the formula of adapting two books of the “Saxon Stories” per installment. If “The Last Kingdom” Season 4 is treated similarly, then it will tell the story of “The Pagan Lord” and the “Empty Throne,” Digital Spy reported.
As such, more bloody conflicts between the Danes and the English is expected to occur. “The Last Kingdom” Season 4 will tell the story of Uhtred’s journey in recapturing Bebbanburg with a group of outcasts helping his plight. And since the warrior has now fallen out of favor of the new king, Uhtred’s path will be more difficult than ever.
Apart from this, “The Last Kingdom” Season 4 will also have the protagonists deal with Viking raids coming from Ireland. To complicate matters further, tensions between leadership will rise in the fourth installment as the new generation looks to take over.
With Mercia’s current ruler dying, those who have legitimate claims to the throne are now vying to sit upon it. The West Saxons are supporting their king, but Uhtred’s allegiance lies with Æthelflæd. In the previous installment, they fall into a forbidden love, which will undoubtedly provide more tension in “The Last Kingdom” Season 4.
And while Æthelflæd has all the traits of a leader, the idea of being ruled by a woman will be difficult of Saxon warriors to accept. With all these emerging plotlines brewing, “The Last Kingdom” Season 4 is looking like another solid entry for the historical drama. But it would be difficult to top the third installment’s finale given the reception it received. Indeed, it was so well executed that even if it was the last season for the series, it would make a fitting finale for the story of Uhtred.
