“The Last Kingdom” Season 4 is speculated to employ a time jump if show creators remain faithful to the installment’s source material. So far, showrunners have followed the pattern of adopting two books of the “Saxon Stories” per installment.
If Netflix sticks with this formula, then “The Last Kingdom” Season 4 will be telling the story of “The Pagan Lord” and “Empty Throne.” In the former, the story will be jumping 10 years ahead, which will significantly affect the plot revolving Uhtred’s (Alexander Doetsch) children, RadioTimes reported.
His two sons will be following in his father’s footsteps and prove themselves worthy warriors through combat. However, Osbert – the second son – is expected to uphold his father’s legacy more given that Oswald has been influenced by Christianity. Another plotline to follow in “The Last Kingdom” Season 4 is the relationship between Uhtred and Æthelflæd (Millie Brady).
While their romance is considered a forbidden love, Uhtred will remain loyal to Æthelflæd, which will ultimately lead to her being the new ruler of Mercia. However, their romance eventually crumbled when Uhtred involved himself with Eadith. But even though this is the case, Æthelflæd and Uhtred will maintain their friendship. These events are expected to occur in the latter part of “The Last Kingdom” Season 4.
Before Æthelflæd becomes Mercia’s ruler, there will be opposition from other factions. Among them are those who aren’t fond of being ruled by a woman. Indeed, as Mercia’s current ruler slowly succumbs to his death, a lot of characters with legitimate claims to the throne will be trying to take the seat of power. Meanwhile, “The Last Kingdom” Season 4 will also be dealing with Viking raids coming from Ireland.
With forbidden romance, deadly politics, and epic battles expected to occur, the fourth installment will undoubtedly bring another satisfying storyline for its fan base. As for the release date of “The Last Kingdom” Season 4, Netflix hasn’t announced anything yet. While a late 2019 airing is still on the table, it’s highly likely that the streaming giant will push it to 2020, perhaps slotting it between March and April, DigitalSpy reported.
