The Freddie Highmore-led medical drama is one of ABC's most-watched series, so it was not surprising when the network ordered “The Good Doctor” season 3. The show will also maintain its timeslot and will reportedly begin filming next month as it aims to return in fall.

About a week ago, ABC revealed its 2019-2020 TV show lineup that includes “The Good Doctor” season 3. Most of the series in this list is getting a fall release date. They usually have a mid-season break before the year ends so it would continue through its finale in 2020.

The same announcement confirmed that “The Good Doctor” season 3 will still take a Monday night primetime slot at 10 p.m. ET. Another proof that the show will return after a few months is a report coming from CarterMatt that filming will begin in June. The same publication mentions the production will still be situated in Vancouver and will possibly follow the same timeframe as it did for season 2.

“The Good Doctor” season 3 is part of what ABC calls its “top shows” along with the “Grey’s Anatomy” season 16 and “A Million Little Things” season 2. Data from TV Series Finale shows that the show, though it saw a dip from last year’s rating, was able to maintain millions of viewers through live airing, DVR, and same day ratings.

The first season averaged a 1.78 rating in 18-49 demographic and 9.77 million viewers. The second installment, on the other hand, garnered a 1.12 rating and an average of 6.73 million viewers from its 18-episode run. That is still a substantial number, despite the obvious decline, so it was not shocking for ABC to announce that “The Good Doctor” season 3 is happening.

ABC is not expected to announce the exact release date of “The Good Doctor” season 3 anytime soon. However, the show has had consistent premiere dates — Sept. 25, 2017, for season 1 and Sept. 24, 2018, for season 2 — so fans can expect the upcoming installment to return around that time as well.
