“The Blacklist” Season 6 will not be returning this year and is expected to premiere in January 2019. While this announcement has disappointed most of the crime drama’s fans, the delay is actually needed given how the previous installment ended.
Season 5’s finale revealed that Red (James Spader) isn’t exactly who he’s been portrayed to be as Liz (Megan Boone) discovered she’d actually been working with an impostor this whole time. Show creator Jon Bokenkamp said they’ve been closely guarding this plot twist since the series’s inception and is elated they finally got to drop the shocking revelation, Entertainment Weekly reported. Bokenkamp added that “The Blacklist” Season 6 will be completely different from its predecessor given that the mentor-apprentice relationship of Red and Liz has now been shattered.
Liz is no longer the naïve FBI agent she once was when Red specifically requested to work with her all those years ago. She has learned a lot from the mysterious figure as they teamed up in hunting down some of the most notorious criminals in the world. But “The Blacklist” Season 6 will have the agent turn her skills against the very man who taught her as she tries to connect the dot to find out what Red’s real identity is.
Unfortunately for Liz, Red is quite the elusive target as he's proved time and again how crafty he is whenever finds himself in a tough situation. However, for all the espionage skills of Red, he’s only human and is bound to make a mistake. What these mistakes will be remain to be seen but the showrunners will surely have the fugitive miss a step or two in “The Blacklist” Season 6.
What’s more, Liz is expected to employ some of the darker traits that she picked up from Red. Bokenkamp said that they’re excited to have the character finally undergo a major development as she’s been portrayed as someone who is still wide-eyed at this point of the story compared to her colleagues. However, the showrunners have already begun portraying the darker side of Liz in the previous installment as she managed to hunt down and kill her husband’s murderer. Will she be killing again in “The Blacklist” Season 6?
There’s a high probability that she will. Liz has already lied to people she’s worked with and has killed people in the past. And given that the agent vowed to destroy Red, it may be that she’s slated to go head to head with the very man she believed to be her father in “The Blacklist” Season 6.
