The season 3 finale of “The Blacklist” gave way to the shocking revelation that Liz was actually alive. Unfortunately, she is now in the hands of Red’s nemesis Alexander Kirk. Showrunner Jon Bokenkamp recently spoke to Deadline about the upcoming season and what fans can expect.
"The one person that Red cares about in this world is now missing and in the hands of his enemy. As for Red, rest assured, he will be on fire," he said.
Of course, fans already know that Kirk claims that he is Liz’s father. He told Liz so himself while she was tied to a chair. Fans can only speculate what will happen there.
Regarding the faked death of Liz though and the subsequent consequences that the act brought about, Megan Boone who plays Liz in the show can shed more light. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview, Boone explained that her faked death was a result of her strained relationship with Red.
Boone also clarified that her real-life pregnancy had nothing to do with the faked death scene. It was already set to go down that way because Liz needed answers – answers that Red didn’t seem to want to give her.
“When Liz asks Red a question — possibly one she's asked him many times before — he is persistent in steering the conversation to a different subject,” she said. “He is consistently evasive, so it's timely that she try other avenues to get the answers she seeks as well as actively seeking out the life she wants. It's a good point in the series for Liz to break away."
Naturally, it’s to be expected that Red will end up rescuing Liz and her baby. However, according to Bokenkamp, their relationship will still be tumultuous. In the end, this kind of dynamic is what defines the connection between the two characters.
“The Blacklist” Season 4 premiere is set to air on NBC this fall.
